Stanley Kubrick
The name Stanley Kubrick may bring up images of the filmmaker’s iconic films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Dr, Strangelove, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and many more Hollywood staples. But what many people don’t know is that the Bronx-born Kubrick became an apprentice photographer at Look magazine in 1946.
After selling one of his photographs to Look Magazine of a sad news vendor reacting to the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Kubrick joined Look, becoming the youngest staff photographer in the magazine’s history. He was just 18 years old. During that period, he lived in Greenwich Village with his wife, Toba Metz.
His photos are packed with drama and beauty, he really had an eye for an image, this works for both his photographs and his films. He would capture the streets and culture of New York City during the 1940’s.
Even after he became famous as a filmmaker, he still loved photography and would take many pictures from behind the scenes of some of his biggest movies.
Response:
I have always been a big fan of Stanley Kubrick and his many films. But it wasn't until I watched a documentary about him (Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures) where I discovered that one of his first career jobs was as a photographer for LOOK magazine when he was 18.
What did you find most interesting about them?
What I found interesting of his photographs was his views and perspective of New York City.
What reaction did you first have when you viewed their work?
When I first song some of this pictures it almost felt like I was actually in 1940s New York. His vivid photographs breed of life into the structures and people of New York at the time
What is you absolute favorite photograph from this artist (Explain why)?
my absolute favorite photograph from him from when he worked for look magazine was the wording or they had the depressed man having to sell newspapers about the death of Franklin D Roosevelt's. In the photo you can really see that he and almost entire country or going through a tough time having to deal with the death of a great president.and this picture really doesn't need a description; the expression on the man's face next to the newspaper headline says so much with so little. But also I would say that one of my favorite pictures that he took as a director was the one of the apron the new newspaper on the set of 2001 a space Odyssey. In the film it shows the ape evolving by discovering things Such as bones for tools .but in the behind the scene photo it looks as though the apex evolved so much that he can read newspapers and to me that's very humorous.
